Our Story

Australia's first Stillbirth Awareness and Prevention Charity

Baby

In Australia, 6 babies each day are born without breath. Many of these deaths are preventable.

Heart

Still Aware's mission is to end preventable stillbirth through awareness and education.

Story

Still Aware was founded in 2014 by Claire Foord following the loss of her and and her husband Brad's precious baby, Alfie Foord-Heath, on 14 12th February 2014.

Alfie’s death came without warning and without answers. Like many families, Claire and Brad experienced the shock, grief, and isolation that can follow stillbirth. In the midst of that loss, they recognised how little accessible information existed around prevention, the importance of monitoring movements and risk awareness.

From this devastating experience, Still Aware was created with a clear purpose: to ensure that families are better informed, better supported, and empowered with practical knowledge that may help prevent avoidable loss.

What began as one mother’s response to tragedy has grown into a national movement committed to ending preventable stillbirth through education and awareness.

Our Founder

Stillbirth is a tragedy that no family should endure. In February 2014, Claire and her husband, Brad, welcomed their daughter, Alfie, into the world. On that same day, they said goodbye. Alfie was stillborn at full term. She was a healthy, much loved baby, but without breath. In the aftermath of this loss, Claire chose to channel her grief into action. She founded Still Aware to increase education, improve awareness, and advocate for meaningful change in stillbirth prevention. Claire has become a strong and consistent voice for families affected by stillbirth. In recognition of her work, she was named South Australia’s Local Hero in the 2016 Australian of the Year Awards. Alongside her advocacy, Claire is an accomplished visual artist whose work is exhibited and collected in Australia and internationally, including in the United States, Canada, and Germany. She holds a Bachelor of Visual Arts and a Diploma of Education.
