This information is provided to support awareness and informed decision-making during pregnancy. It is not intended to cause fear, guilt, or blame. Stillbirth can occur even when all recommended care and actions are followed. These daily actions are designed to help you understand your baby’s movements and changes, and to encourage timely conversations with your health care provider if you have concerns. Always trust your instincts and seek medical advice if something does not feel right.

Six Steps to A Safer Pregnancy

  1. Action
    Action 1

    Know Your Baby's Normal

Get to know your baby's normal. Avoid comparing your pregnancy to others. You and your baby are a team.

  2. Action
    Action 2

Monitor the strength pattern and frequency of your baby's movements.

They will start as flutters but will become stronger as your baby grows and develops. If you notice your baby's movements are not as strong as usual, you should contact your care provider straight away.

  3. Action
    Action 3

    Trust your instincts.

Report any concerns or uneasy feelings to your care provider without delay. DO NOT WAIT!

  4. Action
    Action 4

Get to know your baby's usual way of moving.

Learn how your baby usually responds. Are they a morning person or a night owl? Does your baby like to kick along to music? Once you learn your baby's "normal" you can advise your Midwife or Doctor if you notice any changes that concern you.

  5. Action
    Action 5

Take note of how often your baby moves.

There is no set number of times a healthy baby moves. Most babies have noticeable asleep and awake times from about 28 weeks. If your baby starts moving less often than they usually do, tell your care provider immediately. DO NOT WAIT!

  6. Action
    Action 6

Sleep on Your Side from 28 Weeks

Its important you go to sleep on your side from 28 weeks. If you wake up on your back, don't worry, just go back to sleep on your side.

Why Is This Important

Understanding your baby’s movements and recognising changes during pregnancy can help support earlier detection of potential concerns. Research shows that changes in fetal movement are sometimes linked to increased risk and may be an early sign that a baby needs closer monitoring. By taking simple daily actions, you become more familiar with what is normal for your baby. This knowledge can help you notice changes sooner, feel more confident raising concerns, and support timely assessment by your health care provider. Acting early can make a difference.
