What is Stillbirth?
Stillbirth is the death of a baby of 20 weeks gestation or more. There are 6 babies stillborn each day in Australia, affecting 1 Australian family every 4 hours. In some cases stillbirth may be preventable. Research suggests that around 20-30% of late stillbirths could be avoided with timely, evidence based care and intervention. Evidence based research shows that targeted strategies such as monitoring movements, sleeping on your side and advocating for your baby can significantly reduce the risk of late stillbirth. Families and maternity care providers need access to trusted, evidence based education to recognise critical warning signs, seek care early, and advocate for their baby’s safety.
